Brothers Cavan and Quinn Sullivan were both on target as the Philadelphia Union defeated Toronto FC 4-1 on Saturday, guaranteeing an automatic place in a best-of-three round of the MLS Cup playoffs.
According to ESPN, Cavan struck twice while Quinn contributed a goal and two assists. That made them only the third set of siblings in MLS history to score for the same team in one match, after Gonzalo and Federico HiguaĂn and Diego and Yimmi Chará.
The 17-year-old Cavan now holds 23 goal contributions this regular season, extending his record for a teenager in a single MLS campaign. Diego FagĂşndez had held the previous mark of 20, set in 2013. ESPN also noted that Cavan became the youngest player to score for the United States men's national team last month, in a match against Mexico.
Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Quinn delivered a cross that Indiana Vassilev controlled, drawing goalkeeper William Yarbrough off his line before setting up Cavan to tap into an unguarded net. Quinn converted a penalty in the 41st minute to double the lead.
Toronto responded in first-half stoppage time when Josh Sargent headed home a Djordje Mihailovic corner. However, Philadelphia restored their two-goal cushion in the 58th minute, as Quinn broke forward following a flicked header from Bruno Damiani and teed up Cavan for a first-time finish. Damiani completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute.
The win left Philadelphia on a 14-12-8 record and 50 points, sixth in the Eastern Conference. The club had already secured its 10th postseason appearance, and its eighth in nine seasons. Since interim head coach Ryan Richter took charge during the World Cup break, the Union have collected 43 points out of a possible 57 and outscored opponents 48-22.
They will now meet third seed New England Revolution in the opening round.
Toronto, already out of playoff contention, finished at 9-13-12 and remain without an away win over the Union since March 2019.
Philadelphia captain Alejandro Bedoya came off the bench late on in what was his last MLS regular-season outing.
