A Dutch second-tier derby between Vitesse and De Graafschap was cancelled on Sunday after De Graafschap's own supporters stopped the team bus from setting off for the match.

According to ESPN, the game had been due to start at 12.15 p.m. local time at the GelreDome. Thousands of Vitesse fans had already taken their seats, but the visiting side never turned up.

The trouble stemmed from a dispute over away tickets. ESPN reported that De Graafschap's allocation had been cut from 800 to 500, with extra safety requirements also put in place. Because some fans refused to accept those conditions, a decision was taken on Saturday night to bar away supporters from the fixture altogether.

On Sunday morning, supporters responded by blocking the exit used by the team bus at De Graafschap's stadium and locking the gates to the car park, leaving the squad unable to travel.

Jan Bluyssen, the Dutch FA's Manager of Competition Affairs, condemned the episode, saying he had never encountered anything similar. "This is truly unacceptable," he said, adding that while people are free to disagree, this was not the right way to express it.

In a statement, the Dutch FA said supporters who make football impossible damage their club, their team, the sport and the thousands of fans who attend matches. The governing body confirmed the case has been referred to its disciplinary bodies, and said the competition board would consider the situation the following day before announcing a new date and any consequences.

No date has yet been set for the rearranged match, and no sanction against De Graafschap has been announced.

De Graafschap have so far only responded briefly on social media, saying they were shocked by the day's events and wanted to let emotions settle and assess what happened before commenting in more detail.
