Marc Marquez has offered high praise for championship rival Jorge Martin, describing the Pramac rider as an “incredible talent” while highlighting the importance of having competitive machinery in MotoGP.

Speaking to journalists at the Indonesian Grand Prix in Mandalika, the eight-time world champion explained that his respect for Martin grew after studying his riding data when he joined Gresini Racing in 2024.

“Martin was one of the ones who impressed me most,” Marquez said, pointing to their similar riding styles, particularly their aggressive approach under braking.

Marquez also praised Martin’s fighting spirit, describing him as a rider who refuses to back down. His comments reflect the Spaniard’s appreciation for Martin’s ability, even as they compete against each other for the sport’s biggest prize.

However, Marquez stressed that individual talent alone is not enough to guarantee success in MotoGP. He explained that a rider’s performance depends heavily on the competitiveness of their motorcycle, regardless of their natural ability.

“If you have the bike, you can do things,” Marquez said, warning that even the most talented riders will struggle without a machine capable of fighting at the front.

His remarks appeared particularly relevant to Martin’s decision to sign a two-year deal with Yamaha, a manufacturer facing a difficult period in terms of competitiveness.

Marquez has experienced a similar dilemma in his own career. In 2024, he left Honda before the end of his contract to join Gresini Racing on a salary-free deal, prioritising the opportunity to return to winning form over financial security.

The move eventually helped him rebuild his competitiveness and put himself back in contention at the highest level. Marquez has previously emphasised the importance of making difficult career decisions, even when they require a rider to set aside pride and take a different path.

Martin welcomed the praise from his rival, admitting that recognition from a rider of Marquez’s stature was meaningful.

“It’s always appreciated when someone like Marquez speaks well of you,” Martin said, adding that he was proud to be competing against the eight-time world champion for the title.

Martin also credited Marquez with pushing him to improve.

“Marc is the one who makes me better, because to beat him I have to bring out the best in myself,” he said.

Their mutual respect comes amid an increasingly tense championship battle. Following a dramatic Indonesian Grand Prix weekend, Marco Bezzecchi led Aprilia to a historic 1-2-3-4 finish, while Martin reclaimed the championship lead.

Martin held 355 points, just two ahead of Marquez, with Bezzecchi occupying third place. With five Grands Prix remaining and 185 points still available, the title race remained finely balanced.

Marquez’s praise for Martin underlines the level of competition between the two Spaniards. Yet his comments also serve as a reminder that the championship will depend on more than rider ability alone, with machinery, consistency and the ability to deliver under pressure all likely to play decisive roles in the battle for the crown.
