Arsenal ended a long wait for victory at Anfield on Sunday, beating Liverpool 1-0 to climb to the top of the Premier League table.

According to ESPN's report by Beth Lindop and James Olley, the result was the Gunners' first league win at Liverpool's ground since September 2012, when Mikel Arteta was still playing for the club. Arsenal now sit three points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, while Liverpool trail the leaders by nine points.

Kai Havertz settled the contest before 17 minutes had passed, finishing at the far post after a cross from Declan Rice. ESPN noted that the move began with a loose pass into midfield from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. The goal took the German to 46 Premier League goals, moving him past Ilkay GĂĽndogan as the competition's highest-scoring player from Germany.

Liverpool, managed by Andoni Iraola, reacted strongly to falling behind. They felt aggrieved when no penalty was given for a shirt pull by Jurriën Timber on Alexander Isak, and Alexis Mac Allister headed over late in the first half after a dangerous delivery from Milos Kerkez. The hosts recorded 28 touches in the Arsenal box before the interval, which ESPN described as the highest first-half figure against Arsenal in a Premier League match since records began in 2008-09.

Despite that pressure, Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target. Arsenal had a strong opportunity to extend their lead, but Alisson pushed a low effort from Christos Tzolis around the post.

Arteta's side limited their opponents in the second half, helped by a substitution on 62 minutes in which the more attacking Myles Lewis-Skelly replaced Bruno GuimarĂŁes. The win came after Arsenal's recent Carabao Cup defeat by Fleetwood Town had raised doubts about their character.

The defeat ended Liverpool's run of five straight wins in all competitions. Lindop praised Arsenal's defensive discipline, writing that "goals win you games, it is defence that wins you titles."

ESPN also pointed out that Manchester City's ground is now the only Premier League venue where Arteta has never won, either as a player or as a manager.
