Gio Reyna will miss the United States men's national team's Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal against Haiti this month after picking up an injury while playing for Strasbourg on Friday.

According to ESPN, the attacking midfielder had been named in the squad only days earlier. The nature of the injury has not been disclosed, but it is serious enough to rule the 23-year-old out of international contention. Reyna had found the net in the Ligue 1 match before walking off and heading directly down the tunnel.

The setback comes at a difficult moment for a player who had been rebuilding his career. Reyna managed just 577 minutes for Borussia Monchengladbach across the 2025-26 campaign, and his inclusion in the US World Cup roster in the summer surprised many observers. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino backed the decision, saying: "I really trust in him."

That faith appeared to be rewarded. Reyna scored at the World Cup and started for the national side during the September and October window. In September he also set up the first international goal for 19-year-old Orlando City striker Justin Ellis.

His club form has been equally encouraging. ESPN reports that Reyna has logged 645 minutes over 10 games for Strasbourg, already the second-highest total of any season in his career. He leads the club, which fields the youngest squad in Europe's big five leagues, in chances created and ranks second in the squad for total shots.

Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress. Muscle problems sidelined him for numerous matches in 2025-26, a groin strain caused a lengthy absence in 2024-25, and a hairline fracture kept him out for a few months in 2022-23. Figures from Transfermarkt cited by ESPN show he has missed 96 games for club and country through injury since the 2021-22 season.

Stoke City midfielder Jack McGlynn has been called up in his place. The former Houston Dynamo player has made an immediate impact in the English Championship, recording five goals and two assists in 11 appearances.

It remains unclear how long Reyna will be out of action.
