Even for a two-time Formula 1 World Champion with Red Bull, the thrill of a new challenge is irresistible. Max Verstappen, a man who lives for racing, is setting his sights beyond Grand Prix circuits, with the legendary Spa 24 Hours emerging as a prime target for his 2027 GT racing calendar. This move signals a deeper engagement with endurance racing, a discipline offering different highs and hurdles than his dominant F1 career.

Key Points:

Max Verstappen is actively planning a return to the Spa 24 Hours for the 2027 season.

His Belgian heritage and love for the iconic circuit are major driving forces.

This comes amidst his continued Formula 1 success, but also his expressed interest in diverse racing challenges.

Recent impressive outings in GT World Challenge Europe and Nurburgring 24 Hours highlight his growing GT ambitions.

Why Spa Calls to the Champion

It's no secret that Spa-Francorchamps holds a special place in Verstappen's heart. "It’s my favourite track, of course, so I’m trying to make it work," he revealed after a strong ninth-place finish in the GT World Challenge Europe at Portimao. His connection to the circuit runs deeper than mere preference; Verstappen was born in Belgium, and his mother, former kart racer Sophie Kumpen, is Belgian.

"I’m also Belgian, so it’s just nice to be there to do one of the biggest endurance events of the year. I’m going to try my best to be there," he affirmed. The appeal of tackling such a demanding, historic race on home soil is clearly a powerful motivator for the Dutch-Belgian superstar.

Beyond Formula 1: The Lure of Endurance Racing

Despite securing consecutive Formula 1 wins recently, Verstappen hasn't shied away from voicing his criticisms of the forthcoming 2026 F1 regulations. While firmly committed to his Red Bull contract, his foray into GT racing offers a refreshing outlet. Endurance events like the Spa 24 Hours introduce a new dynamic: teamwork.

"Sharing the car with team-mates is of course something that I haven’t really done in my life so far," Verstappen commented. He got a taste of this at the Nurburgring 24 Hours where he shared a car with Dani Juncadella, Lucas Auer, and Jules Gounon. They even led until a late driveshaft issue ended their impressive run. This collective effort, combined with competing against former karting rivals now excelling in GT, adds an exciting dimension for the competitive driver.

Navigating the Packed Calendar

The proposed 2027 Spa 24 Hours falls between the Portuguese and British Formula 1 Grands Prix, creating a tight but potentially manageable window. Verstappen acknowledges the need for careful planning: "I just need to plan it all well that, of course, when I arrive [I’m] also well prepared."

While other major Intercontinental GT Challenge races like the Bathurst 12 Hour (February) and Suzuka (clashes with F1) appear off his 2027 radar, the Nurburgring 24 Hours and Spa remain strong contenders for his limited GT appearances.

For now, the focus shifts back to Formula 1, with the upcoming United States Grand Prix after his recent victories in Sepang and Singapore. His goal in GT remains consistent: "It’s just every race making progress, getting better, getting more and more experience, and showing yourself between all the big boys in the paddock."
