AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim turned his criticism on both his players and himself after a surprise 2-0 home defeat to Hungarian club Ferencvaros on Thursday left their Europa League campaign in serious difficulty.

According to ESPN, Amorim said his side had not been mentally ready for the match and admitted he could offer no defence of the performance at San Siro.

Forward Lenny Joseph was the match-winner for the visitors, scoring twice within 14 minutes shortly after half-time. His first came after a mistake by Milan's backup goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, and he added the second on a quick counter-attack as the hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Ferencvaros held on despite substitute Bamidele Yusuf being shown a straight red card in the 77th minute, and Milan were unable to make the extra man count. The result keeps the Hungarian side's perfect record in the league phase intact.

For Milan, the defeat was their third in four European matches. They have just three points and sit 28th in the standings.

The loss came only days after Milan beat Serie A rivals Inter Milan on Saturday. Amorim made six changes from that side and then made three substitutions at half-time, one of which brought on United States international Christian Pulisic.

The former Manchester United manager said his team were not yet equipped to compete on both domestic and European fronts, and suggested he may have made errors in his preparation. He also acknowledged that the opposition had been superior in technical, tactical and mental terms.

"When you play for Milan, you have a responsibility," Amorim said.

The struggles in Europe contrast with Milan's domestic form, with the club having lost only once in 10 Serie A games so far this season.
